Submission for the exhibition "Drawing Women out of the Shadows", 2022
"Zheng Yi Sao was a chinese woman of humble origins who married the pirate Zheng Yi in 1801 and became one of the greatest pirates in history. Together they organised the Guangdong Pirate Confederation, with six fleets, and they commanded the biggest one, the Red Flag Fleet. After he died, she took control of the Confederation and married his adopted son to consolidate her power. At her lead it became even more active and her ships entered into conflict with several major powers, such as the East India Company, the Portuguese Empire, and Qing China. In 1810 she surrendered on her own terms, and she had a relatively peaceful life after piracy owning an infamous gambling house until she died in 1844."
